HISTORY, EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES
Philip Clayden trained as a furniture designer maker in the late 1980s. His aim has always been to create aesthetic forms that will provide inspiration and enjoyment both immediately and throughout the years. “I am making furniture to be loved and prized - heirlooms of the future”, he says.
Working as both an artist and a craftsman, a defining feature of Philip’s career has been the wide variety of projects he has undertaken, giving him the opportunity to develop his skills in many areas.
In his words: “I have a fascination with structure and form... I am never content to rest until I have met a design question with a really exciting solution.”
Attentiveness to the client is one of the key values underpinning the processes of consultation, commissioning, design and making. “My clients are looking for furniture that both expresses their individuality and perfectly fulfils their practical needs. For this reason my work cannot be compared to mass-produced furniture” he says.
He recognises the great privilege of being chosen to provide furniture that will form part of his clients’ lives, and so strives to maintain the highest standards of originality and quality.
Once the functional aspects of the design have been resolved, the task shifts from that of the engineer to that of the artist. He explains: “My task is to imbue the functional with the aesthetic: The functional aspect of a design must be offered within proportions and forms which maximise its aesthetic impact.”
Building on his long experience of bespoke furniture design, in recent years Philip has developed an expertise in producing work for public spaces. Examples of this range from a finely carved church choir-stall prototype to sculpted Gates and benches surrounding an Iron-Age hill-fort. In 2008, his SolidArt team successfully re-created the Athelstan Museum in Malmesbury to great acclaim.
